‘STOP CONSTRUCTING AT THE EXPENSE OF NATURE’ – this was the title of the winning card at the Lions Advertising Festival 2010 in Cannes, France.

Picturing a turtle with buildings under constructions on its back, this free card from the Maniacard Company was designed as part of an awareness raising campaign for UNDP Albania`s Climate Change Programme, winning the public award “Cannes Act Tribute 2010” in the category of Free Cards.

The winning card is part of a series of three cards published in Albania in February 2010 to raise awareness on climate change impacts and the consequences of human actions, including erosion and intensive flooding that threatened natural habitats in the area of Kune, Vain and Patok Lagoon. This unique project has attracted the attention of artists, environmentalist and the general public all over Albania, with more than 360.000 free cards being distributed.

UNDP Climate Change Programme in Albania is working with the government of Albania to meet its commitments to international conventions as part of the EU accession process as it advances its efforts to implement the Climate Change Convention and the Kyoto Protocol.

The Drini–Mati River Deltas on Albania`s eastern coast is a biodiversity zone of national and global significance. It has been identified as highly vulnerable to the impacts of current and expected climate change, suffering from climbing temperatures, increasingly intense cyclones, reduced rainfall and rising sea levels.

UNDP is supporting local authorities and their constituents to develop the region`s conservation and development programmes, plans and policies that seek to safe-guard the fragile ecosystem and ensure local livelihoods.

UNDP also supports the use of renewable energy sources, protect biodiversity, and streamline commitments to international environmental conventions - specifically those related to biodiversity, climate change and land degradation.
